John McConnell: “Speechwriting for the President: Tales from the Trenches” | Talk at Google

A longtime senior speechwriter for President George W. Bush, John McConnell was part of the three-person team responsible for all of the 43rd President’s major addresses, including the speech to the Joint Session of Congress after September 11, 2001 and four State of the Union Messages.

During his tenure in the Bush administration, John McConnell also co-authored eulogies by President Bush and Vice President Cheney for President Ronald Reagan, remarks following the loss of the Space Shuttle Columbia, and the President’s remarks on September 14, 2001, at the National Cathedral in Washington. John McConnell visits the Mountain View office to share his personal anecdotes from his time working in the Bush administration, he talks about the intricacies of the White House speechwriting process, and he offers practical strategies and tips for effective public speaking.
