In the two hundred years since we discovered that microbes cause infectious diseases, we’ve battled to keep them at bay. But a recent explosion of scientific knowledge has led to undeniable evidence that early exposure to these organisms is beneficial to a child’s well-being. Our modern lifestyle, with its emphasis on hyper-cleanliness, is taking a toll on children’s lifelong health.
Dr. Brett Finlay is a Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of British Columbia. He has published just under 500 research papers and enjoys international recognition for this work. Dr. Finlay led the group that sequenced the SARS genome and developed the vaccine for that devastating disease. He is an officer of the Order of Canada — the highest Canadian civilian recognition. Dr. Finlay visited our Google Seattle office to discuss the science behind his latest book “Let Them Eat Dirt: Saving Your Child from an Oversanitized World”, which is being translated into 11 languages, and what parents can do to help their children lead healthier, more balanced lives.
