Learn how two experienced engineers, Joseph Smarr (Google) and Chris Lamb (NVIDIA), collaborated with computational photographer, Daniel Ambrosi, to enable an engaging new art form called “Dreamscapes.” Ambrosi explains his motivations and aspirations behind the artistic journey that led to his groundbreaking large format artworks. In this talk, Ambrosi shares his thoughts on the powerful connection between visual perception, visceral experience, and cognition. Ambrosi’s Dreamscapes employ digital cameras and a suite of graphics software to create immersive, vibrant, highly-detailed panoramic landscape images. He then transforms these giant panoramas using a custom-modified version of Google’s “DeepDream” artificial intelligence software in order to imbue his images with a stunning degree of wholly unexpected form and content that is only revealed upon close-up viewing. In this context, Ambrosi discusses the broader implications and significance of collaborating with artificial intelligence in the creation of contemporary photographic art. Smarr also provides an overview of their technical challenges and solutions.
