Dan Yates: “Earth Day” | Talks at Google

“The average person spends 6 minutes a year thinking about their energy use. How much do you think about yours?

In celebration of Earth Day at Google, Dan Yates, CEO of Opower, gives an inside look at how new technology is changing the relationship between utilities and their customers. Founded on a simple premise, Opower develops home energy management software to engage the millions of people who are in the dark about their energy use across North America and the UK. The company is working with more than 65 utilities to help people find easy ways to save money on their utility bills. So far, Opower has saved a Terawatt Hour of energy, effectively taking 90,000 homes off the grid and avoiding enough pollution to take 100,000 cars off the road.

Previously, Dan was founder and CEO of Edusoft. He sold the 150-person, $20M company to publisher Houghton Mifflin in 2004. He then embarked on a year-long adventure with his wife, driving from Alaska’s Arctic coast to the southernmost tip of South America. During the trip, he resolved to dedicate his professional life to sustaining what remains of our natural world.

In 2011 Dan received the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year 2011 Greater Washington Award, and was named a “”Tech Titan”” by the Washingtonian in 2009, 2010, and 2011.”
