Does Giving Blood Make You Healthier?

“Some donors believe that donating blood actually makes them healthier. That line of thinking is correlated with medical bloodletting. Once a popular treatment for many diseases all over the world, it hasn’t been widely used since the late 19th Century. Although bloodletting has been largely discredited in the scientific community, a similar procedure became popular with the iron-store hypothesis, based on the idea that too much iron in the blood can increase our risk of cancer and heart disease.”

“Aging is a killer. Incidence rates for heart disease, cancer, kidney disease and dementia all skyrocket as people reach their 70s and 80s. How Much Blood Is in the Human Body?

“There’s enough blood in the human body to fill a bit more than a 1-gallon milk jug. The average adult has about 1.2 to 1.5 gallons (4.5 to 5.5 liters) of blood circulating inside their body, said Dr. Daniel Landau, a hematologist and oncologist at the University of Florida Cancer Center – Orlando Health. If you had no blood, you’d weigh 8 to 10 percent less. (Of course, you wouldn’t be alive, either.) So, for example, in a person weighing 120 lbs. (54 kilograms), blood takes up about 9.6 to 12 lbs. (4.4 to 5.4 kg).”
